Sources for the study of History

To study history we need to know how the vast knowledge of history is being collected and presented. There are basically two sources for the study of history as below:

1. Primary Sources

 (First hand information)

2. Secondary Sources

(Second hand information) 

1. Primary Sources :-

It is the main and most authentic source in history, it's nothing but the first hand information for ex. Manuscripts(original documents), Epigraphy (Study of Inscriptions), Numismatics (Study of Coins), Historical Monuments (Forts, Palaces, even Ruins of historical buildings) can be considered as primary sources etc.

2. Secondary Sources :-

The above primary sources are the authentic sources which tells us exactly what happened in the past but interpretation of these sources is hardly impossible until we are the masters of these fields. Hence for people like us we can opt for "Reliable" secondary sources to understand these primary sources in a easy fashion. So basically secondary sources are nothing but literary records which is prepared by the masters of history by interpreting the primary sources. For ex. "Reliable" History books, Thesis, Research papers, Magazines, Articles, Documentaries, Lectures etc. By going through all these secondary sources we can utilise the expertise of these masters of history and try to understand the matter of study in a brief and easy way. 

Note: Please note that before referring to any of the secondary sources you need to do a good research whether that particular source is Reliable or not. Because we know that there are lot of secondary sources which were prepared to propagate some sort of agenda or myths or by just ignoring some important facts available just to misinterpret the facts or create distrust among the masses for a particular community. 

Hence whenever we are opting for any secondary sources to study history we need to be more cautious.
